we are looking at
Inishmore, a beautiful
little island off the
west
coast
of
Ireland. At first,
Inishmore seems
exactly the same as it
was fifty years ago, but in fact it
is a very different place today.
Colman Connely,a 70 - year-old islander, says, ' When i was young, tourists could reach inismore. There wasn;t an airport or any ferry boats in those days. There were only donkeys any small fishing boats for getting around. Life was difficult.
We didn't have much money - we only had small stone cottages. We didn't even have electricity or running water inishmore was a quiet place - there weren't any guest houses or restaurants back then. Today, up to 2.000 tourists a day can visit inishmore. 'Now there is an airport', says Connely. "There are also cars, buses, bicyles and big ferry boats. Life is very easy now. We have got new, modern houses any a lit of money. We have also got electriity and running water. Inishmore is very buse now. There are guest houses, restaurants and lots of souvenir shops.' Coneely looks across the green fields in front of his house and smiles. 'Yes, Inismore is beautiful and we're working hard to keep it just like this"
