The most common safety device used in every household installation the ordinary fuse. This is simply apiece of wire which is connected in series in the circuit. It is of such resistance that it will melt and therefore break the current, if the current flowing in the circuit exceeds a certain amount. Vhen it happens, we say the fuse "blows".
